      PROCEDURESS FOR JOINING VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING CENTRES IN TANZANIA 

1.0.      Introduction  

The Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) was established by the Vocational Education and Training Act. No 1 of 1994 as revised on 2006 for the purpose of coordinating, regulating, financing, and providing vocational education and training.

VETA operates its functions through nine (9) geographical zones. VETA zonal offices were established in order to facilitate effective coordination of VET centres in different regions. The offices coordinate establishment of new VET centres, registration of Vocational Training Centres, accreditation of VET programmes, coordinate the availability and implementation of approved curricula, quality auditing of VET centres, assessment and certification.

2.0.      Joining VETA – owned Centres

VETA has a set of systematic procedures for people interested to join its centres for vocational education and training. The procedures are as outlined below:

2.1.       Applications to join centres owned by VETA are invited every year in August, through announcement in the media and in the VETA’s website, www.veta.go.tz.

2.2.       Applicants must possess a minimum of standard seven (VII) education;

2.3.       Application form may be collected from the nearest VTC owned by VETA. The forms contain information about all VTCs, including the occupations taught, locations and also whether they are boarding facilities  or not;

2.4.       The applicant is allowed to do the aptitude tests in the region where he attained the application form but may choose to go to a centre in any other region;

2.5.       The Aptitude Test is done in October, and the successful candidates are notified in December,  ready to start training in January of the next year;

2.6.       The successful applicants are served with joining instruction letter that stipulates the necessary requirements for the training. The requirements differ from  one centre to another, and depend on the occupation to be pursued and the type of accommodation required- boarding or day;

2.7.       In entry, the trainee starts at level I, which is the lowest level. Progression thereafter is to levels II and III.

3.0.      Joining other (Non – VETA) VTCS

Procedures for joining these VTCs depend on arrangements peculiar to the owners. Nonetheless, all these VTCs are VETA registered and the training conforms to standards approved by VETA. The curricula, assessment procedures, and certification standards are those approved by the same Authority.

4.0.      The training fees

In the VETA – owned VTCs, the annual fees for long courses is TZS 60,000/= for day trainees, and TZS 120,000/= boarding. The fees can change any time from now.

VTCs not owned by VETA have their own rates depending on the owner, the occupation and type of accommodation arrangements.

5.0.      Access to VTCs

(i)           Addresses of VTCs owned by VETA are given in this brochure.

(ii)         Information on other VTCs may be obtained at the VETA Zonal offices or at VETA Head office and the VETA website.  

(iii)        It is important that applicants should seek the most reliable information about these VTCs because some of them have good advertisements though have not been registered.
