WORLD AIDS DAY/ SIKU YA UKIMWI DUNIANI, December 1

Join NAT this World AIDS Day and… Put A Ribbon On It

The Tanzania Commission for AIDSThe Tanzania Commission for AIDS
This year the National AIDS Trust are asking people to show solidarity with the 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK - and the 34 million world-wide - by wearing the universal symbol of HIV awareness, the red ribbon. We want you to get creative - put it on landmarks, people, clothes, buildings, food. There is nowhere the red ribbon cannot go!

Here are 6 ways you can Put A Ribbon On It this World AIDS Day (and don’t forget to send us the pictures #PutARibbonOnIt).

  1. Join our HIV Activists Network in challenging HIV stigma. Write to your MP and ask them to #PutARibbonOnIt in Parliament and in your local area this World AIDS Day. Find out if your local NHS Trust has signed up to our No HIV Stigma campaign – and if they haven’t, ask them commit to an NHS that is HIV stigma-free!
  2. Food is just crying out to be ribboned. We like it best on cakes but canapés, pies and biscuits all somehow taste better with a ribbon on them. Check out our Bake Aware pages to get recipes and tips.
  3. What better canvas than your own body. Go to town with body or face paint, have a dressing-up day at work (we can send you some red ribbons to fashion into your outfits) or create some funky nail art.
  4. Ever get bored looking at the same old front door, work building, local landmark? How about putting a ribbon on it? Historically, iconic landmarks all over the world, including the Sydney Opera House and the Empire State Building in New York, switch their lights to red to mark World AIDS Day – or projected a red ribbon on the side. There is no reason why your building at work couldn’t do the same. If that sounds too much then why not just decorate your office with red ribbons.
  5. Get crafty with it. If you have any special skills use them. The lovely people at the Craft Club are making woollen Snowmen with red ribbons on them for World AIDS Day and they are looking for people to help them.
  6. Simply wear a red ribbon. Whether its fabric, sparkly, wooden or our special 2014 brooches, you really aren’t dressed without a red ribbon.
All of these things can also be done while raising money for NAT – sell some red ribbon cakes, have a sponsored dress up day. All money raised goes to ensuring NAT can continue its work campaigning for the rights of people living with HIV.
