President Ruto appoints 20 new High Court Judges
President William Ruto has appointed 20 people shortlisted by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to serve as Judges of the High Court.
Their names were submitted to the Head of State by JSC for appointment last Thursday.
Through Gazette Notice No. 15193, President Ruto made the appointed the new High Court Judges in exercise of the powers conferred to him by Article 166 (1) (b) of the Constitution.
The newly appointed High Court Judges are:
1. Gichohi Patricia Njeri
2. Mongare Josephine Wayua Wambua
3. Nyaundi Patricia Mande, SC
4. Kavedza Diana Rachel
5. Chirchir Sophie Chebet
6. Sifuna Nixon Wanyama (Prof.)
7. Shariff Mwanaisha Saida
8. Nyaga Heston Mbogo
9. Chigiti John Mugwimi
10. Mulwa Peter Mutua
11. Nthiga Lawrence Mugambi
12. Mutai Gregory
13. Wananda John Robert Anuro
14. Mohochi Samwel Mukira
15. Olel Francis Rayola Ochieng Odhiambo
16. Githiru Freda Mugambi (Dr.)
17. Magare Dennis Kizito Ng’wono
18. Macharia Florence Wangari
19. Odera Teresa Achieng
20. Visram Aleem Alnashir
In a statement issued last Thursday, JSC indicated that the 20 shortlsited candidates were picked following a thorough vetting exercise that was finalized on December 1, 2022.
“After lengthy deliberations and careful consideration of the performance of the various candidates and based on the constitutional imperative of merit, gender, regional balance, and affirmative action, the JSC has recommended the appointment of the underlisted to the Office of the Judge of the High Court and has submitted their names to His Excellency the President for appointment,” Chief Justice Martha Koome said in a statement.
Vacancies for the position, she indicated, were advertised on March 31.
The appointment of the 20 High Court Judges is expected to play a key role in easing the backlog of cases that have for a long time been a thorn in the flesh of the judiciary.
